Australian fixed broadband operator and MVNO, TPG Telecom in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange on Wednesday, confirmed that it is in talks with Vodafone Australia over a potential 'merger of equals' between the competing companies.
TPG announced last year that it will become Australia’s fourth mobile network operator with a $2 billion investment to cover 80 percent of Australia’s population. Initial mobile network coverage will include CBD areas and numerous surrounding suburbs in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane. The Operator which is now building its own 4G network announced in May that it will be launching six-month mobile plans at zero cost for its first customers in Q3-Q4 2018.
The merger with Vodafone, Australia's third-biggest mobile player after Telstra and Optus, could generate more synergies for TPG in terms of a faster and cheaper entry into the mobile market.
