Telefonica reported an impressive second-quarter profit of EUR 3,693 million, a 105.4% increase compared to the same quarter a year ago. The group operator's revenues went up 12.4 percent to EUR 11.876 billion, owing to increased sales in Spain and customer growth from its takeovers of E-Plus in Germany, GVT in Brazil and DTS in Spain.
Telefonica ended the second quarter with 253.6 million total mobile subscribers, adding a net of 844,000 new customers in Q2 alone. At the same time, Telefonica's smartphone penetration reached 41 percent of customers, growing 11 percent points year-on-year.
The Operator also saw an increase in its mobile data revenues, with mobile data now accounting 42 percent of total mobile service revenues. Its digital services revenues totalled 938 million euros, a 27 percent increase year-on-year.
The group operator's capital expenditures during the first half of the year grew 66.4% to 5,094 million Euros, said Telefonica.
