Legere: T-Mobile Tops Sprint in Prepaid, Boasts 15.64 million Subscribers Source: T-Mobile

T-Mobile recently announced that its prepaid customer base has reached 15.64 million, taking the first spot in the United States prepaid market. T-Mobile highlighted that its prepaid subscriber number has surpassed its closest rival, Sprint by 450,000, while two other operators in the top league, AT&T and Verizon Wireless record a base of 11.34 million and 6.04 million subscribers respectively.

According to T-Mobile, the achievement comes on the back of its aggressive customer acquisition strategy which resulted in rapid growth in the number of subscribers signed-up in urban areas across the US. The growth took off with T-Mobile's merger with MetroPCS on May 1st last year, which saw MetroPCS expanding to 45 major metro areas with close to 10,000 stores and subsequent addition of 1.2 million new customers, to a total of more than 10 million customers.

T-Mobile in its statement said that at the rate MetroPCS has expanded, the brand is seeing a new sign-up every 27 seconds. T-Mobile also said that it now has over 50 million total customers and is the operator of the fastest 4G LTE network in the country

"The good news just keeps on coming for T-Mobile. The momentum we’re seeing with our T-Mobile and MetroPCS brands is outstanding, and the fact that we’ve blown by everyone to take the No.1 spot in prepaid is icing on the cake. As a matter of fact, I’m going on record—I predict we’ll overtake Sprint in total customers by the end of this year. Not someday. Not next year. This year. Americans are voting with their feet, and they’re joining this Un-carrier revolution by the millions. Not only are we seeing record growth, we’re also making huge strides on our network and in customer support.”
