China Telecom Mobile Data Traffic Volume Nearly Tripled in 2013

China Telecom's profit jumped 17.4 percent year on year to 17.55 billion yuan in 2013, according to its annual report. Its mobile services revenue increased 23%, reaching 113.8 billion yuan last year, recording one of the highest growth in the industry. Its mobile subscribers reached 186 million, with a net addition of 25 million. China Telecom's 3G services saw a huge climb in its subscriber numbers, surpassing 100 million subscribers within the last year, recording a net addition of 34 million subscribers. The number of 3G subscribers as a percentage of China Telecom's total mobile subscribers increased to 56%. 
With a growth of 27.3%, the mobile data revenue is reaching the tipping point of overtaking voice and messaging, making up a total of 55.5 billion yuan in revenue last year. 3G data traffic increased significantly from 72.3kTB to 175.1 kTB while the monthly average data usage recorded an increase of nearly 42%, reaching 190MB.  
Wireline broadband revenue reached 70.8 billion yuan in the same period, representing an annual increase of 6%. The total number of wireline broadband subscribers exceeded 100 million, with a net addition of approximately 10 million. Among these subscribers, the number of Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) subscribers was close to 27 million or 30% of the total number of wireline broadband subscribers, representing an increase of over 70% year-on-year. 
According to China Telecom, emerging businesses, including mobile data traffic, Internet applications and informatisation applications, experienced rapid growth of nearly 30%. It also added that its new customer acquisition approach led by applications and services, achieved remarkable results and China Telecom will be further investing in initiatives in the areas of application-driven development, functionalities improvement and application presentation.
