AT&T, Friday last week said in a filing with the SEC that it has added more than 200,000 video subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2016, which was driven entirely by its new 'DirecTV Now' Over-the-Top(OTT) pay-TV service.

AT&T is the largest pay-TV provider in the U.S. with more than 25 million subscribers but it faces stiff competition from new rivals like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu and the general decline of cable and satellite subscribers.

In order to sustain its market share, AT&T in November last year launched its own video streaming service, DirecTV Now with breakthrough pricing which starts at $35 monthly for a bundle of 64 channels.

In addition, AT&T said that in Q4 it added more than 900,000 branded net domestic wireless subscribers (roughly 500,000 postpaid and 400,000 prepaid). During the quarter, about 700,000 2G subscribers deactivated their accounts. As of Dec. 31, 2016, AT&T reported that it had 2.3 million remaining total 2G subscribers and non-voice phone connections.
