Ericsson’s latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report shows that Singapore leads in South East Asia and Oceania when it comes to downlink performance and app coverage, as well as in terms of having the fastest peak speeds.

Ericsson’s June 2015 report indicates that the positive effect of expanded LTE coverage and increased spectrum allocation for LTE, started last year by the major carriers, continued to yield benefits in download speeds over the last quarter. With the ongoing introduction of LTE carrier aggregation by operators, a further boost in speeds is expected throughout 2015 as more devices that support the standard become commercially available.

Social networking, instant messaging, and video streaming are among the top five app categories actively used by smartphone users in the region. WhatsApp emerged as the top smartphone app in Singapore followed by Facebook and YouTube. However, in Australia Facebook is revealed to be the leading smartphone app used.

According to Ericsson, operators are faced with users’ expectations for instantaneous, reliable access to their apps, wherever they are.

As users discover new ways to consume data, it will be of greater importance for service providers to be able to fulfil that demand. With growth in smartphone subscriptions continuing, operators will need to focus on network performance to ensure quality of user experience. These strong results are supported by the investment in LTE networks by Singapore.
