The Internet Just Got Bigger, Faster and More Resilient - Akamai's Report

  • Looks like the Internet has just got bigger, faster and more resilient. Akamai, a provider of cloud services for online content and business applications, in their recentlly released First Quarter, 2014 State of the Internet Report, shared the latest data on various aspects of the internet - covering the current connection speeds, security, accessability and content growth from all over the world. Overall, the first quarter of 2014 saw further improvements in the global average speeds of internet connections, including mobile broadband connections though the growth is lesser compared to the year-on-year percentages from first quarter last year. The highlights from the report, as shared by Akamai in their statement, are summarized in the following infographics.

"While there continues to be room for improvement in high broadband adoption and average peak connection speeds in some areas of the world, the trends we're seeing remain very positive. Steady year-over-year growth suggests that a strong, global foundation is being built for the enjoyment of next generation content and services like 4K video and increasingly connected homes and offices, and that connectivity will continue to evolve to support the growing demands these emerging technologies will place on the Internet."
