Simplified video-sharing platforms are growing fast in terms of popularity and usage as more people own devices which come with easy video making capabilities, often with a touch of a button to record and another to upload these videos to their favourite video apps. The use of video apps has seen in recent years, made-at-home videos gaining hundreds and thousands of hits, creating instant fame from recordings that went viral and launching little known performers into stardom after their videos were 'spotted' on-line. Video sharing applications are becoming more common as a simple method not only to showcase things and talent, but are becoming the new form of communication, joing its predecessors such as voice, text and image sharing. People are becoming comfortable telling their stories via the videos they make, and with faster data connection, more app choices and 'liking','sharing' and 'commenting' options, the growth of video applications is expected to continue in the coming years along with advancements to video making, video sharing and complementary technologies including video compression and storage options.
According to GlobalWebIndex, Twitter's video sharing app Vine, is the fastest-growing app in 2013 with a 403 percent growth in total subscriber base between Q1 2013 and Q3 2013 to a total of 24m users. This is followed closely by Flickr, which grew 146 percent and Instagram in third place, recording a growth of 130 percent in 2013. However, in terms of the mobile market, Vine still lags behind Flickr and Instagram, with a reach of just 3% of total mobile users.
