Are We Ready for Mobile Wallets? Not Yet, says research.

Digital services are shifting to mobile devices, creating the next breed of mobile digital services. This opens up exciting greenfield service areas which present enormous revenue opportunities to the various players who are involved in bringing these services to the market. As the last mile connection providers, MNOs will inherently be one of the core players to partake in the mobile digital services segment, benefiting from their ready pool of subscribers and the access they have to information on consumer demand and consumption patterns.

Consult Hyperion, an independent IT consultancy that specialises in secure electronic transactions, conducted an interesting research on the readiness of US consumers to move to the mobile wallet service, one of the major services in the segment. According to Consult Hyperion, over 64% of US consumers say that they would never use a mobile wallet. In terms of who those who would use a mobile wallet trust more to issue a mobile wallet, 20% of the respondents chose banks, 10% chose Google, 3% chose retailers such as Walmart and only 2% chose phone service providers.

“The survey shows that issuers need to do a better job of conveying what mobile wallets are and what benefits they bring,” said Consult Hyperion Global Ambassador Dave Birch. “However it’s interesting to see both that Google outranks both phone operators and major retailers as a trusted issuer, despite the obvious retail applications of wallets, and that banks retain the most trust for such a service.”
