The phenomenal growth of mobile data in the last decade has created both opportunities and challenges to various players in the industry. With the new age OTT applications, both by CSPs and third party service providers, traditional services - voice and messaging - are shifting rapidly onto the data network. The data network will therefore continue to grow and become the de-facto communication channel of the future. The popularity of smart mobile devices, designed with engaging and very user-friendly interfaces and packaged in sleek and easy-to-carry forms, further drives the usage and hence the demand for more data. Given the trend in the data markets around the globe, new technologies in the wireless sphere will continue to evolve and bring about more advancement in the segment. The Device-Network-Application (DNA) has pushed the boundaries for further technological breaktroughs in all aspects of the wireless ecosystem - newer radio technology and better spectrum management, faster and cheaper smartphones/tablets and better apps.

4G Americas' latest white paper, 'Meeting the 1000X Challenge: The Need for Spectrum, Technology and Policy Innovation', outlines the need for multi-faceted approach which includes enhancements to mobile technology and better management of radio spectrum that will enable service providers to cater for the ever increasing demand posed by many more users, new devices including those with larger screens and forward application, including rich media services.

“Mobile data traffic has been doubling year upon year, and the challenge is upon us today to uncover the solutions going forward to enable mobile broadband to reach its full potential for consumers, enterprises, governments and the entire wireless ecosystem,” explained Chris Pearson, President of 4G Americas. “Every stakeholder across the industry needs to cooperatively explore and develop the strategies for dealing with this growth, and that includes technology enhancements and equally important spectrum policy innovations.” Source - 4G America (Oct 10, 2013)
