According to a news report in VietNamNet Bridge, mobile subscribers in Vietnam may have to start paying for OTT (over the top) applications, especially those that directly impact the revenues from voice and text. Applications such as Viber, Kakao Talk and Zalo have been rapidly adopted by data users, especially among the young, who favour the simple apps to talk and send short messages. According to the report, Vietnam operators are seeing erosion of revenues from traditional voice and text messaging and have turned to the regulatory authorities to address the situation. VIetnam's Ministry of Informtion and Communication (MIC) is leading the initiative to start charging subscribers over the use of OTT applications. Meanwhile, some Operators are already in the process of increasing data rates to compensate for the losses in revenue. For the rest of the world, this could mark the beginning of the huge change in the operational models and can redefine the relationship between content providers and MNOs. With the regulatory authorities stepping into the picture, the market can anticipate changes in the present charging and billing structure on data usages especially for users who have become accustomised to extensive usage of OTT applications.
