With 143 million people and a GDP of USD1.858 trillion, Russia's market for broadband services is huge and growing rapidly on the back of enhanced networks and increasing demand for data services. Rostelecom, its largest national telecommunications operator who is present in all Russian regions has recently announced a tender to purchase a network intelligence solution to cater for better management of its 3G network. According to Moscow Time, Rostelecom plans to spend USD33million for the solution, which will use Deep Packet Inspection Technology to enable features such as selective content control, parental control as well as other add-on services and innovative product plans. Rostelecom has 13.5 million mobile voice susbcribers at present with another 9.5 million fixed-line and 6.8 million pay-TV subscribers.

Larisa Tkachuk, senior vice president and commercial director of Rostelecom, said the company was placing "a strong emphasis on data services while developing Rostelecom's mobile business, since the majority of modern services are connected to the Internet, including online shopping," according to a statement published on the company's website last week.
