The exponential growth in mobile services across the globe has the standards such as 3GPP to thank for. Unlike other sub-segments, the success of the roll-out of services on the mobile network has depended on all the many different parties conforming to common specifications. This is where bodies such as the 3GPP, taking the lead in providing the platform for these parties to base their current and future development initiatiaves, come into play. The 3GPP has enabled the otherwise fragmented players such as the MNOs/CSPs, technology vendors, base stations providers, device makers, system integrators, application developers, softwares designers etc to work on common specifications that allows seamless integration of multiple components to create what we call the 'network'.

Towards this end, the 4G Americas,a wireless industry trade association representing the 3GPP family of technologies, today announced that it has published an Executive Summary,'3GPP Release 11: Understanding the Standards for HSPA+ and LTE-Advanced Enhancements', to provide a concise overview of the essential features standardized in the latest release finalized by the global standards body. This is a timely release given that worldwide MNOs/CSPs are deploying 4G LTE services and are looking into enhancements to their services. The release is expected to accelerate the development of complementary technologies and solutions that will witness the rapid adoption of high speed broadband being accompanied by enhancement in service features and increase in overall quality.

“3GPP standards have successfully driven the mobile marketplace to more than 6 billion connections worldwide,” stated Vicki Livingston, Head of Communications at 4G Americas and a contributor to the paper. “There is a continuing story for 3GPP evolution in the coming years, with further enhancements to both HSPA+ and LTE-Advanced and the expansion of connectivity into Machine to Machine and many vertical industries.”

Chris Pearson, President of 4G Americas noted that, “With the tremendous amount of planning, technical contribution and development that has been extended by the many working groups at 3GPP, the mobile broadband industry has a solid technical  future with HSPA and LTE-Advanced.  The technical evolution of LTE, teamed with more spectrum and innovative regulatory policies, will go a long way in meeting the difficult mobile broadband demand challenge that society has placed on wireless carriers.”
