Wall Communications Inc., an Ottawa-based economics research and consulting firm, has released its latest price comparison study measuring the prices that Canadians pay for mobile phone service, landline phone service, internet service (both fixed and mobile) and bundles of these
same services(including basic TV service). According to the report, the prices have maintained a downward trend, with typical rates
for mobile phone services declining by 13% while rates on data packages, on average, falling by
6%. This marks the overall downward price pressure across the telco sector, where as more deployments take place and number of subscribers multiply, operators, in response to stiff competition reduce their rates accordingly. The report also benchmarked Canadian prices with those of US, the UK, France, Australia and Japan..
"We have seen a decrease in mobile phone service prices since last year," said Gerry Wall, president of the company. "In the case of a typical basket of mobile phone services – including voice, text, call display and voicemail features – the decrease has been most pronounced falling by about 13%. Prices for mobile service packagesincluding data decreased to a lesser extent, but are still about 5% lower relative to last year."
