Alcatel-Lucent recent blog post discusses the impact of 'appvertising' and how this trend will impact data usage on various networks. Appvertising consumes large volumes of data as

Impact of adware on mobile data plans, 2G, 3G, LTE

depicted in the blog, with 2G and 3G customers spending 14% and 3%, while LTE customers spending 1% of

their overall data consumption on these. Most subscribers barely note how these adverts are pushed to them through the many free apps that they use as Adware servers subtly execute the function of finding and pushing the right adverts to the target subscribers. Depending on the data plans, the device and the apps used, subcribers on 2G networks can expect to spend up to 25% of their data on these adverts alone, though the impact is much less on 3G and LTE where the bulk of data traffic comes from video streaming and other data intensive applications. These adverts drain the batteries too and depending on the network, the more the free apps one uses, the higher is the battery usage.
