Mark Evans, O2’s Chief Financial Officer has been named as the new CEO of Telefónica UK from 1 August 2016, taking over from Ronan Dunne who is leaving the business and and steping down from the UK Board and Telefónica SA Executive Committee.
Mark Evans joined O2 in January 2012 as CFO and has since achieved sustained financial performance and industry-leading customer retention for the company, despite changing market conditions. His most notable success has been to allow for O2 customers to benefit from industry-leading flexible contracts, which are automatically reduced once the cost of the handset has been settled.
Evans who previously held senior leadership roles across the mobile industry for more than ten years, also oversees the running of the successful giffgaff brand, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Telefónica, and is Chairman of Tesco Mobile and Non-Executive Director at Hiscox.
There are talks that the appointment comes after a planned takeover of O2 by rival firm 3 was not given a go ahead by European competition regulators.
