Leader of OpenBTS Project, Range Networks Joins Open Invention Network
  • Range Networks, the leading provider of commercial open source cellular systems and leader of the OpenBTS™ software project, announced on Wednesday that it has joined the Open Invention Network (OIN) to promote the Linux open source ecosystem.

OIN, a shared defensive patent pool with the mission of protecting Linux, provides Range Networks free license to access its non-Linux defensive patent portfolio comprising over 850 worldwide patents and applications.

    • Based on OpenBTS, Range Networks delivers mobile connectivity for rural communities, remote industries and emergency responders, and supplies development networks to commercial labs and universities.

"I am very pleased to see Range Networks join Open Invention Network to help ensure the long-term future of open source software.  Open source is a great source of innovation and value to customers and users.  As a founding member of OIN, Red Hat welcomes Range Networks to the cause of Linux patent non-aggression."

Michael Cunningham, Executive Vice President, General Counsel, Red Hat

"By joining the Open Innovation Network, Range Networks is pledging its commitment to the open source community. The pledge of Linux patent non-aggression by so many important companies benefits our company and the entire Linux ecosystem and the patent protection provided by OIN sends a strong message that IP threats to open source development and innovation will be fought.
