AIS, Thailand’s leading mobile network operator, has selected Alcatel-Lucent's small cells solution in response to the increasing demand for its data services especially in areas with more intensive use of data. The small cells deployment sees AIS implementing the technology in popular tourist destinations and shopping malls in Thailand, as well as in urban environments and villages.

According to Alcatel-Lucent, its small cells solution will provide AIS with an efficient and cost effective way to increase coverage and capacity for an improved customer experience – both for voice and high speed data access – by placing the radio technology closer to users. Having started its small cells deployment in September last year, AIS, the first mobile service provider in Thailand to deploy the technology, has already installed 500 small cell units, with plans to bring the figure up to 3000 units this year, added Alcatel-Lucent.
