British telecom giant, Vodafone recently confirmed that it is in discussions with Liberty Global regarding the creation of a joint venture in the Netherlands that would incorporate both companies’ local operating businesses.
Vodafone said in a statement on Tuesday that the "discussions are ongoing and do not extend beyond the creation of a joint venture in the Netherlands." There is no certainty that a deal will be agreed, added Vodafone.
The JV talks between Vodafone which operates a mobile business and Liberty which owns Ziggo, the largest cable TV operator in the Netherlands resumed last September, after both companies terminated an earlier discussion on a broader merger across various European markets last year.
Liberty Global has recently launched MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) operations in Austria and Ireland, via UPC Austria and Virgin Media respectively to provide bundled offers by adding mobile to its existing cable, fixed-line and broadband services.
